description: In The Background Is Fort Edmonton, (Which Was First Built By The Hbc In The Valley Of The North Saskatchewan River In 1795), Rebuilt Further Up River Below Where The Present Legislative Building Is Located. The First Fort Edmonton Was Destoyed By The Blackfoot Indias In 1807. The Fort Had An 18 Foot High Palisade (Fence Of Pointed Sticks) Around Its Four Walls And Corner Block Houses Of Two Storeys. Governor George Simpson Visited Fort Edmonton In May, 1825 And A Ball Was Held For The Entire Population. Two Weeks Later He Joined The Annual Boat Brigade To York Factory. Pointed Barges Seen In The Photo Carried Five Tons Of Cargo In The Form Of Supplies And Bales Of Fur. They Were Manned With Eight Oars And Used A Square Sail When The Wind Was Right. Seen Also In The Photo Are Red River Carts And Wagons Pulled By Horses, And A Group Of People. The Trip To York Factory Would Take Four And A Half Months To Complete With Supplies For The Next Season. Image From A Painting By J.D. Kelly

description: The Original Hudson'S Bay Company Trading Post And Dwelling House With A Tent And Another Building Between. Daniel Harman, Officer Of The North West Company At Fort Alexandria On The Upper Assiniboine, Wrote Of Portage La Prairie On May1st, 1805: "Here The North West Company Have A Miserable Fort, The Local Site Of Which Is Beautiful Beyond Anything I Have Seen In This Part Of The World." The Coalition Of The Northwest Company And The Hudson Bay Company Was Effected In 1821, And In 1832 The Hudson Bay Re-Established At Portage La Prairie, Building A Trading Post On The Site Of La Verendrye'S Fort. In The Rebellion Of 1869 - 1870, The Employees Of The Hbc Post Were Taken Prisoners By Emissaries Of Louis Riel And The Store Was Looted. Some Years Later The Company Discontinued Operation On This Site And The Property Was Converted Into A Farmhouse. The Hand Hewn Log Building Of The Store Was Still Standing When The Farm Was Purchased By Mr. Donald H. Bain In 1943
